A consumption tax is a fine idea, better in many ways than an income tax. The problem is not the consumption model, it is the conversion from the income to consumption model.

I am very conscious of this because I just retired. I paid income tax all my life, sometimes over fifty percent. Now when I've quit earning and will start spending to keep myself for the rest of my life, you want to tax my money all over again. T'ain't fair.
