The new drive is actually quite old - it was from a PII-400 Gateway system that was given to me to play with. Huge case with lots of empty space for all the dust. The "new" drive is a 13.6GB from IBM.

I haven't developed a preference for a HDD manufacturer... yet. At the risk of prompting an easy AMD slam, I will say that like memory I feel it is worth a premium to have higher reliability when selecting a HDD.

That said, I agree with your "two kinds of HDD" line and routinely back up my data - the real value of what is contained within a computer, especially for business.
