Hawk, that'll teach me not to play silly games with words like 'racist'. That word's like a red flag to a bull to me. It's a handy epithet to sling around when people don't have an argument to support their ideas. Now you've picked me up on it! I shouldn't have polluted my argument with such a silly, misused word. Okay, I agree it's not racist to suggest that Afghans are not ready for democracy [though for many people it would actually be for racist reasons that they think some people are unsuitable for some things]. But my point is that they were not ready for war either, but your friend claims that in only 30 years they have been converted to animals. That doesn't fit what I have seen. I don't believe your friend is right about the preparedness of Afghanistan for civilization, rule of law and all that good stuff which seems to fit so comfortably around everyone else who tries it. It is an easy fit. War, conflict, theft and mayhem are much more difficult and abnormal. To assume the nasty stuff is easier than the good stuff is a peculiar idea to me. Mqurice
