I think he's overstating the case. For instance -

"Rapid spending on IT and white-collar headcount suddenly morphed into bloated cost structures, unleashing an extraordinary squeeze on corporate profit margins."

You can disagree with Sun management, but they seem to have concluded that the "bloat" in manpower amounted to about 9% (which they are now in the process of paring). Even twice that number doesn't seem like such a huge overshoot, given the growth rates that had been ongoing. If not for 9/11, the number might have been even smaller.

JMHO.

Monday morning quarterback. You could get the same analysis from 20% of all 10th graders.
