I don't believe the UN is in a position to do much. There is no constitutional basis for it or will to really get stuck in and do what's necessary.

Constitutional basis? Who cares about international law?? I AM talking giving the UN some teeth (after all, we're going to bear most of the cost anyway) by being backed up by US, and hopefully NATO, military power.

They WILL PERMIT THE UN IN THERE, or face the same wrath that the US dealt to the Taliban. And this time around it will come from EVERY UN MEMBER NATION who has troops and personnel deployed there.

That's what I'm talking about.

Forget about reviewing whether we have the right to do something... this is a case of "might makes right"...

Certainly the Northern Alliance would not be in their current favorable position had it not been for US support.

And I would have to believe they have learned some true respect for the capabilities of the US to utterly destroy their ability to conduct military operations.

Hi Maurice Winn; Re the genetics of the Afghanis. I agree that the Afghanis are no dummies, and that in addition, they're not particularly predisposed to violence. Other than the argument being wrong, I also find it racist.

One could more reasonably argue that safe and non violent places tend to breed stupid people, and that unsafe and violent regions tend to be subject to more evolutionary pressures.

And the same applies to violence. War tends to kill the most violently inclined people and to leave the ones who prefer to hug the bottom of a foxhole (or to avoid service completely) alive.

The problem is social, not genetic. Humans are capable of change. It is not common, but every now and then a culture (just like a person, a member, for instance, of AA) turns over a new leaf and changes completely. It is God's work that we must be attentive to changes that are possible, which is not always easy to do.

Hitler grew out of the ravages of WWI and I would not be at all surprised to find a replica grow out of the ashes of Afghanistan

mq,
we are already there.

ossama bin lucky (so far) is a product of the ashes of the last afghani war.

this is the second devastating conflict and war for the country in one or two generations. between conflicts, the individual afghani citizen has had his and her basic rights trampled...the people have been sorely oppressed and now they are racked by war again.

for the second time in 20 years, 25% of the people, 6,000,000 afghanis, are fearful refugees on the move. living in a stark barren landscape with little hope to survive a close winter but afraid to go home.

these people are ready for a new structure...anxious even.
i believe any government proposed by an afghani political group with international support that includes a permanent relaxing of taliban oppression, coupled with programs to improve the country's infrastructure and economic base, will be quickly embraced and supported by all.

we have experience with this kind of problem. the various tribes of the very primitive montagnard tribesmen were in similar straits in the 70s. that is another long story...but let me just say that with our help, all of the montagnards who desire now live in peace in orderly well-run communities. the kids are being educated...many have or are now attending American universities. their former combatant org "FULRO" is out of business...they have hope and peace and they love America. some of the youngsters are serving in our armed forces today. the tribes in the highlands continue to improve their station...admittedly not without some difficulty...but nothing extraordinary that does not get resolved some peaceful way.

the afghanis are ready for peace...no new hitler like despot has a chance to make it there.
