I only brought up the point because you expressed such surprise that a Muslim would look to others for help in appreciating the Qur'an's message.

Your contention about the Bible's self-sufficiency is not shared by the majority of those who call themselves Christian. No Roman Catholic or Orthodox Christian believes this. For them the Church, not the Bible, is the central focus of Christian faith and salvation. Jews have the Talmud and other texts which amplify and interpret the Torah. Even within Protestant sects which do believe that the Bible is self-sufficient the proliferation of Bible schools and study programs provides ample evidence that many profit from the scholarship and teaching of others rather than simply reading the texts without aid.

So why be surprised that Islam should be no different in this regard?
