The IDF stated that the positions were taken without substantial Palestinian resistance. IDF troops tightened blockades around the cities of Tul Karm, Nablus and Jenin. Israel re-deployed from Jenin last Tuesday in a goodwill gesture to U.S. envoy Anthony Zinni. Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer referred to the cities of Jenin and Nablus as "terrorist hot spots," while security sources said that the current alert was the highest it has been in the past year. "We are on the outskirts of Jenin which includes an area under Palestinian control. Near Nablus we are outside the city but not in area A (under Palestinian control)," a security source said. Ben-Eliezer said Saturday that it was not his aim to enter Palestinian-ruled cities as Israel had done after the assassination of Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi in October. "We don't have an interest to enter area A, but I can tell you we won't sit quietly. And we will strike at anyone who strikes at us," he told Channel Two television. An urgent meeting was held Friday evening between Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer and U.S. envoy to the Middle East Anthony Zinni in light of the terror warnings. Deputy Defense Minister Dalia Rabin-Pelesoff also attended the meeting. During the meeting Ben-Eliezer briefed Zinni on the current security situation, telling him that terror groups were increasing their operations in order to thwart Zinni's mission in the region.
