Re: our CIO is trying to push Athlon MPs
Why is he doing it? (i.e. Whats in it for him?)

Probably the same reason that I do it, the same reason that people like me pushed to bring in IBM PCs almost 15 years ago to cut down on per seat costs and increase the available performance relative to the terminals we'd been using up to that time.

You bring down your costs by implementing the high performance / low cost solution. You keep your costs down by maintaining a procurement relationship with more than one source - so that there is always competition. And you make sure that you aren't just buying from the same source under two names.

Particularly when an entrenched supplier has been extracting above market returns and delivering below market performance, it is important to be willing to encourage an alternative source - and you can gain a competitive advantage in your own business if other companies in your sector stick with the low performanace / high cost solutions offered by the entrenched supplier.

Nothing personal. For certain applications that run in smaller departments we have 2 way Intel Xeon boxes or 4-8 way Suns. Through some benchmarking that we've done on our internal software it turns out that the Athlons do very well in the kind of apps that we run. We also saw that the P4 is not doing so good on our apps. So for the time being we're sticking with Tualatins unless we get approval to get Athlons.

p.s. He did not believe the enormous performance difference between the athlons and the P4 until he saw the benchmarks.
