"Athlon XP one of the best-received processor launches ever from AMD"

OTOH, the Duron is a dud. But that's what I have been saying for long ;-)

From HardwareCentral, Weekly Platform Trends: Intel and AMD:

hardwarecentral.com

"AMD CPU Prices

The Athlon XP looks to be one of the best-received processor launches ever from AMD. The sheer quantity of Athlon XP systems at resellers can be staggering -- Compaq offers every speed option on its Presario 8000, compared with only two Pentium 4 choices for both home and home business configurations. In terms of pricing, the Athlon XP line maintained its steady if unspectacular decline, while continuing to offer better deals than comparable Pentium 4s. Older Athlon models moved down at the midrange, but the 1.3GHz to 1.4GHz processors are holding fast. Our weekly Athlon pick remains the Athlon XP 1700+, which has probably the best price-performance ratio of all CPUs on the market.

AMD's Duron surprised us this week, as prices decreased right from the Duron/850 all the way to the /1.1 -- but the dearth of Duron systems from major vendors continues. It used to be you couldn't check out Compaq's value line without running into a few Durons, but the chip is now conspicuously absent; ditto for MicronPC, Hewlett-Packard, and other large vendors who offer AMD desktops. There doesn't seem to be any anti-AMD bias involved, though, as the Athlon XP seems to be getting more exposure than the original Athlon ever did. If you can find one, the 1.0GHz Duron is a steal of a deal."

Let's hope that the enormous success of the Athlon XP will compensate the apparently drastic decline of Duron sales. So, AMD may have high ASP but rather low sales volume this quarter. They may even loose some market share.

Niceguy,

I never thought Sharkey Extreme would write such things but just look at the Conclusion of this November 27, 2001 Athlon XP 1900+ Review:

sharkyextreme.com

To put it bluntly, the Athlon XP 1900+ is simply the fastest processor we've had the pleasure to test, and is certainly the highest performing desktop CPU currently available. There are a few issues relating to potential upgrade incompatibilities and multiplier locking, but this CPU is fast enough and the KT266A platform inexpensive enough, to let those negatives slide. With the right mix of components, the Athlon XP 1900+ is a gamer's dream come true, and combines exceptional performance with a price that won't break the bank."

I am going to have to build me one of these!

Kindest regards,
CrazyMan
