Nadine, last week 5 kids from the same Palestinian family walking thru a field in their own land on their way to school were killed by a booby trap laid by an Israeli state sponsored terrorist. Do you think Arafat should have ordered a hit on Sharon or maybe you think only Palestinian suicide bombers commit outrageous evil acts?

Seems to me that the approach in the last two paragraphs from the Observer article you posted is the only alternative left along with internationalizing Jerusalem.
And unless I am way off base, I think that the tone expressed in the Observer has growing widespread support in Europe and maybe even in the US.

A fair size portion of the educated middle classes would agree with those views (my guess >50%). "Condemn the violence" talk. It's of no practicable use in dealing with the problem.

Tit-for-Tat (although it sounds petty) is in fact nature's true and tested way of obtaining fastest co-operation between competing parties. The Israelies know this of course and don't wait around to act.

[mind you, not sure if "4 for 1" is as effective]

Any peace package would have to involve much more along the lines of how children are brought up and how they are educated. The suicide "honour" idea has to be educated out of the society too. A desire for change has to occur. All this would have to be monitored and verified. Until then, it's dangerous waste of time giving up territories imho.
