I don't see any benefit in putting him under the microscope. I think that his reason is pretty obvious (loyalty to religious teachings outweighed loyalty to his country).

He is more of an anomaly than a trend, I don't really care "why".

I think you give the CIA far too much credit.

If he was a mole, I doubt they'd have allowed him to remain in the lower levels of that prison while the No. Alliance forces were pumping diesel fuel in and lighting it, followed by waist-high water. They'd have figured out a way to get him out.
