Middle East media agree on one thing - violence will continue

Opinion on both sides of the conflict in the Middle East is agreed that the end of the violence is further away than ever.

In Israel, the Jerusalem Post wants increased military action against Palestinian extremists while Ha'aretz asks for "patience".

The Jordan Times, meanwhile, asks whether Palestinians have an option other than terrorism.

The paper asks: "On what basis would the Palestinian side be expected to sit idly by, watching Israeli death squads wreak havoc in the occupied territories?"

It adds: "How can anyone expect that the Palestinian National Authority justify its inaction while Israel, unabated, continues to play out its worst aggressions? The main sources of violence, bloodshed and trouble is the Israeli occupation."

The Jerusalem Post says the "diplomatic approach has failed miserably, because the other side is not interested in diplomacy, but in defeating Israel. A military solution, in contrast, has not failed - it has not been tried."

It adds: "The threat to Israel from terrorism is ultimately even greater than to America. Israel's means of response must be no less resolute."

Ha'aretz takes a more conciliatory line, arguing: "This conflict requires patience and public resilience, and it must be managed wisely. It's easy to fall into the trap of reconquering the territories, or the utter demolition of the Palestinian Authority and its governing institutions. But instead of turning to spectacular reactions, realistic measures should be chosen."

Meanwhile, Gulf News says: "Israel always exacts a far more horrible revenge than anything the Palestinians could ever mete out. And, in return, there will be yet more attacks by Palestinians, thus ever-escalating an already dangerous situation. When will sanity prevail and peace talks begin?"
