Israelis escape new suicide bombing
(Filed: 05/12/2001)

A PALESTINIAN suicide bomber wounded several people when explosives strapped to his body were prematurely detonated outside a hotel in central Jerusalem this morning.

The bomber was crossing the road outside the former Hilton Hotel when the device exploded. "A terrorist killed himself when he was crossing the road. A powerful bomb which was strapped to his body blew up. Nails and shrapnel flew in all directions. He was blown completely apart," said Jerusalem police chief Miki Levi.

Police said at least three people standing at a bus stop nearby were hurt by flying glass. Islamic Jihad has claimed responsibility and said the bomber meant to blow himself up inside the hotel..

The attack followed an Israeli pledge that there would be no pause in two days of air strikes against Palestinian security installations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip after 25 people were killed in weekend suicide bombings, claimed by Islamic group Hamas.

Israel has blamed Palestinian president Yasser Arafat for today's attack, as well as the weekend bombings, because he has failed to rein in militants. Palestinian officials denied the charges and said Israel's actions amount to a declaration of war.

Pearly, have you considered the international implications of the "right of return". That will mean that arts of Poland France, Russia and Chechia will go back to Germany. When a country engages in an aggression whose goals is to gain territories (in this case the complete elimination of the state of Israel), it should accept the risk that if it loses, it will lose some territories. Otherwise, what is the incentive for them to stop with those attacks? The Arabs could have accepted the partition in 48, but chose to try and get the whole of Israel, they tried twice more (67 and Yom Kippur war), everytime they did, they actually lost some territory. The longer that conflicts continues, the lesser of a state Arafat will get. As for refugees, the number of Arab refugees that left "Palestine" in 48 is about the same as Jewish Arab refugees forced out of their countries. The only difference, Israel took care of its refugees problem, the Arabs kept these as political pawns.

By the way, where were the "National aspirations" for statehood when Palestine was under Jordanian annexation?
