NEC plans for about 0.35 micron^2 DRAM cell using a 0.13 micron process. I assume this is for a 1-bit cell so 8MB would be...
1M micron^2 = 1mm^2
8MB = 8M x 8 (bits/byte) x 0.35 micron^2 = 22.4 mm^2.

Assuming no math (or technical) errors... yes, 8MB is BIG. I was clearly adrift in considering this for a low-end graphics solution to "save" on traces and chip count at a cost (space and process challenges) which is not yet acceptable for high-end GPU.
