Singapore moves to create own Silicon Valley despite recession

sg.news.yahoo.com

The Singapore government unveiled a plan to create a Silicon Valley-inspired science, technology and business center as part of efforts to reduce its dependence on mainstream manufacturing.

The new science hub, described as a "multibillion-dollar icon of the New Economy," will integrate research, corporate, residential and recreational facilities in a new development outside the city center.

A hotel will also be built in the area, to be called One North after Singapore's location one degree north of the equator.

The master developer of the project is state-linked industrial park builder and manager Jurong Town Corp.

It will target information and communications, biomedical science and financial firms, research organizations, and corporate headquarters.

The development is going ahead despite affluent Singapore's worst economic slowdown since independence in 1965. Economic output is forecast to contract by 3.0 this year, from 9.9 percent growth in 2000.
