Actually, I never committed to chess, or formal competition. I spent some time in college casually playing a guy who was a tournament player in high school (I forget his exact rating, but he won a lot), and got to the point of stalemating him, and occasionally beating him. Even when he won, it would be through retaining a few more pawns in the end game, because the games were closely fought. But I wouldn't spend the time studying grandmaster play, which is essential to proficiency.

Thinking about it, I think my friend was a junior chessmaster, or some such designation....

By the way, in junior high school I wrestled and participated in track and field, just to show I could do it. I actually lettered in wrestling. In track, although I was fast, I did not have long enough legs to be a competitive sprinter, nor the wind to be a good long distance runner. I ended up anchoring relay teams, mostly, and trying various field events, like shotput and broad jump. I would often enough place second or third. One problem is that there would usually be guys who were held back, and therefore a year or two older than the rest, in many of these events. By high school, most of my time was taken up by drama and student government, so I dropped sports.

When I was a sophomore in high school, I was on "It's Academic" for the DC metro area. The next year, I was captain. We never practiced (our advisor was lame, and I was elected captain at the last minute). The first year, we went to play- offs. Both years, we were beaten by the same team. Although we had been winning, when it came time to do the buzzer competition, they kept beating us on the buzzer. They were trained not to hesitate, and to hope someone knew the answer after they buzzed in. We lost by frustratingly narrow margins, always way ahead of the third team......

Ironically, Hillary was on "It's Academic" in the Chicago area. Maybe we ought to compare notes.....
