<< I certainly don't do it unless somebody gives me a double your money back guarantee that I'd get the 72 virgins. >>

How about a triple money back, and 144 virgins, but only after death?

<< We have to construct some system of belief on "what the heck is going on" to explain what we are, where we came from, why we are here and where we are going to make it worth getting up in the morning. >>

I don't understand what "worth getting up in the morning" has to do with "what the heck is going on". By "We" are you talking about superstitious religious ones, or about yourself?

<< ... unless we just live like chimps and just exist in thrall to our emotions. >>

How about living like "humans", and just in thrall to our emotions?

Most religions do very well financially, and they do not have to manufacture a product. All they have to do is sell "their concept" of the afterlife, in order to hit the jackpot. They are so successful, that millions are willing to murder others in order to keep that promise of the afterlife. The more miserable someone is forced live, the more they are willing to become a martyr.

Speaking of martyrs, do you think we will get a "bin laden" martyr by Christmas, for a Christmas present?

We have to construct some system of belief on "what the heck is going on" to explain what we are, where we came from, why we are here and where we are going to make it worth getting up in the morning, unless we just live like chimps and just exist in thrall to our emotions. "To be, or not to be"

There are three basic questions we have to ask ourselves, and answer, to get through life. Most of us leave it to the subconscious level to handle these questions, and never consciously form answers to them. They are:

Where am I?

How do I know it?

What should I do?

We handle them, in Philosophy, with three disciplines.

"Where am I?" is called Metaphysics, the study of the nature of the Universe

"How do I know it?" is called Epistomology, the study of the nature of knowledge.

"What should I do?" is called Ethics, the study of how to deal with each other.

Unfortunately, Academia is presently doing a lousy job of teaching this subject.
