"What was the gist of the exchange with Fatboy Kennedy??"

Fatboy had two questions (or one statement and one question). He 1st yammered about the potential illegality of military tribunals, and then proceeded to try to make a political point about gun control (I guess). The funny part was that he asked (in an indignent way imo) why the justice dept did not give a list of gun purchasing background checks for the current detainees to the FBI when requested.

Ashcroft said (paraphrased) that "the answer is simple. Because it would have been ILLEGAL to do so by our laws and constitution". So basically Fatboy asserted that the tribunals would be breaking the law (which they are NOT) and proceeded asking why the justice department WOULD NOT break the law. He then tried to corner Ascroft by asking if he would change that law (as if changing laws was part of his job). Ashcroft handled that perfectly also by saying that it is not his job, but he would certainly consider anything that the lawmakers (Kenedy did not seem to realize this was his job) brought to him. Fatboy must have thought that writing laws was the the job of the AG.

Basically a TEXT BOOK example of democratic smear tactics that fortunately (for thinking and honest Americans) backfired in his face. Both Leahy and Kenedy had a look on their faces very similar to Hilary's during President Bush's address to the Nation after the 9-11 tragedy.

Hatch and Ashcroft on the other hand carried on in a very dignified, patriotic and honorable way that showed OBVIOUSLY that they have the best interests of our Nation well in mind when making their decisions. It is the most impressed I have been with Ashcroft up until this point. He seems to be a smart and honorable man. There was a very sharp distinction between the two sides that most all repubs will enjoy and most all dems will have to figure how to spin there way out of (or go down with the ship).

I hope you get a chance to see it.
