Catch and release, barbless hooks with artificial flies only . In sucha case they seldom swallow as the fake is quickly detected. But onna rare occasion they do get hooked to deep to remove. Studies have shown that if the line is cut and the fish released the hook will rust out in a few days.If on the other hand the hook gets deep enough into the gill to cause bleeding the fish is usually a gonner. This is pretty rare and even non existent unless using a long shanked hook as with a streamer.Proper release technic is also important. Trout have a protective slime on them that prevents infection so it is important to touch as little as possible and only with wet hands.I try not to take'em out of the water if at all possible.

I often post on the "I love to fish “ thread.
