one of the countless young Israelis who travel abroad to relax after the strain of three years of army service.

I'm not buying it Nadine.

This article discussed NOTHING about the activities they were engaged in when they were arrested. Or what it was that was so strange about their behavior, that someone felt compelled to call the authorities. Alledgedly, there were reported to be dancing and cheering on the roof of their building, filming the aftermath of the WTC attacks.

There was SOMETHING, other than their being illegal workers here in the US, that prompted authorities to arrest them.
I would love to see the investigative inquiry that was made about their activities.

And it would seem to me that HAD I BEEN ARRESTED IN ISRAEL on such suspicions and spent 70 days in their jails, I WOULD DEFINITELY BE TALKING TO THE PRESS. I sure as hell wouldn't be quiet about my ordeal, unless there was something I was trying to hide.

The fact that this author didn't choose to rehash the reasons they were arrested, but only focused upon their ordeal, leads me to believe this is aimed at "damage control".

I'm deeply conflicted about the anti-terrorism measures. IMO, anybody who dismisses the need for special measures has not taken the threat seriously. On the other hand, anyone who trusts the judgement of the FBI and John Ashcroft in taking these measures has not examined their track records seriously, either. So I guess that makes me in favor the measures, but I still want Senator Leahy to stay on Ashcroft's case every step of the way.

I like that summary of the issue, though it's not exactly where I am. I'm still concerned about the procedures and would be so whomsoever were exercising them.

But Nadine....look at this another way....You said:

The president, and those who defend his decision on the tribunals, seem to forget that the point of America's constitutional guarantees of civil rights is not to make life easy for criminals. It is to ensure that innocent people are not abused, imprisoned, even executed. When fear is rampant, when knowledge is scarce, those rights are more essential, not less.

If President Bush and his Administration DO NOT do everything possible to protect American citizens from terrorists (different than criminals).... and DO insure TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY that American citizens are NOT ABUSED, IMPRISONED, EVEN EXECUTED (as in the WTC and Pentagon disasters)....then are they doing their job??????

We seem to be so busy making sure that the murders rights are insured....we are forgetting about the RIGHTS of American citizens not to be ABUSED, IMPRISONED, EVEN EXECUTED by foreign OR domestic extremist groups.....

And I believe our Constitution is clear on that, and therefore so should be our foreign affairs policies as clear.

Nadine, when every lefty loon article starts with "mounting evidence show" and then defines a litany of civil liberty abuses that have and are occurring and this is false, the article is aid and comfort to the enemy. Would I trust an FBI led by those who expect certain behavior(obstruction of justice loyalty) or it's an assignment to Podunk Alaska or termination of career.?? Would I trust Janet Reno's judgement??(Well she got Ilian right and kept the gore out of the Presidency) The FBI may still need some cleaning. I have no reason to fear or suspect John Ascroft of doing anything wrong.

As America levels it's destructive powers and bring the aim close to our own citizens in this land, There could be accidental harm from friendly fire. But I believe men of good will hold the guns and will do all in their power to avoid accidently harming any innocent folks.

I will keep close watch and I have no problem with others defining all the possible dangers. But those defining and asserting that the changes are upon us are on different sides of the line. The crap written by Al Hunt was over that line. I watched the testimony of Attorney General Ascroft and Senator Leahy and kennedy don't give a rats ass about the rights of any Americans except themselves and their friends. That's the reality of what I witnessed.
