David Brooks had a good article in The Weekly Standard on friday called "The Best of the Web". In it, he listed the best sites he had found for coverage of the Afghanistan war:

I agree that training for highjackings is punishable. If evidence such as that exists, fine. Maybe we don't disagree much after all.

I remain concerned that the media and powers-that-be constantly bend the truth to rally public opinion. There are two problems: revisionist portrayals of world events by our leaders and bias in the media.

To see media bias, one needs only to compare the coverage of world events by CNN to the coverage in other countries. CNN is as free a press as can be imagined, but they have interests of their own. They cannot and will not give equal time to unpopular viewpoints, because it would hurt their market share. There isn't much that can be done about this, and it has been discussed enough on this thread already.

A bigger concern is the tendency of leaders to paint a picture that fits their needs better than reality does. If our cause is just, we should be able to execute the "war on terror", or any other policy, while resisting official attempts to mold our opinions. I'd rather let our opinions be formed through intelligent discourse and the examination of all available evidence and THEN to let official channels reflect those opinions. Maybe that is a lost cause as well. :(
