Musings on 3G "Killer App"

We know 64K is perfectly adequate for voice services, and a lot of data services too.

So the only potential 3G Killer Apps that demand HS data involve more than ears and mouth: they must need use of hands and eyes.

Forgetting for the moment about the effectiveness of the terminal, the use of one's eyes & limbs for anything but avoiding obstacles asymptotically approaches suicide as speed of personal mobility goes above a slow ramble.

So wildly *successful* 3G applications via truly mobile terminals are quite literally in danger of being "Killer" apps.

It is hard to conceive of a successful service where the example set by the most avid of early adopters is likely to be a spectacular fireball. Or involve the jaws of life.

It's hard to market accidental death, disfigurement and disability amongst the benefits of a service. One usually wants darwinian selection processes in favor of the application, not against.

Furthermore, in an environment where three fluorescent day-glo warning labels do not protect a modest hammer manufacturer from liability, it is also difficult to conceive of a successful 3G data service getting launch approval from corporate counsel!

"Your honor, the plaintiff claims that the defendant was profitably negligent in knowingly releasing this so called "Killer App" into an environment where distractions can be fatal... "

Hmmmm....
