they may have come late to the party, but I would hardly call the U.S. role in WWII minor. where do you get off saying that?

Albert,

Some in the U.S. government indeed wanted to invade Europe in 1942. The British were dead-set against it.

If we had- with green troops, inadequate landing craft, and the Luftwaffe able to contest control of the sky- we would have been slaughtered. Witness the Canadians at Dieppe.

However, it might have taken some pressure off the Soviets.
