Yes, such stories are far from unique in Indian spirituality. For a moving portrait of this tradition I highly recommend The Initiation by Donald Schnell, a.k.a., Prema Baba Swamiji. See amazon.com for details. Swamiji's encounters with Babaji, the "Deathless Avatar" are particularly moving, as is his portrait of a land awash in deep spirituality.

I really don't think spiritual encounters are all that out of the ordinary. But getting back to Jesus Christ, the important aspect is that he was born of a virgin birth. His Human was transformed into being conjunctively part of the Divine itself on the day of Glorification.
