Z,

Ahhh yes... so does this imply bad yields at Intel, or at least ones that are worse than AMD's? Can someone do the math here (someone other than Dan)?

one thing about yields which is an absolute fact is that the bigger the chip lower the yield. This says nothing about AMD vs. Intel, but for example, Piii vs. P4 yields everything else being equal.

The simplest way to illustrate this is suppose you have only 1 tiny defect on the entire wafer. Suppose (these are not correct numbers, just an example) you have 200 Piiis on the wafer, and only 100 P4s on the wafer (P4 is 2x the size of Piii). The result would be that you would get 99 P4s and 199 Piiis. The yield of P4 would be 99%, yield of P4 would be 99.5%.

Joe

PS: Dan3 could most likely explain it better, with math behind. I am surprised you don't want to hear from him.

Never mind the micro math...AMD just announced anticipated record units shipped and record PC procesoor revenues for q4...How far away is INTC from record units shipped and record PC revenues in q4??? Once we answer that, then let's look at the micro math...

There is not sufficient data for such a computational effort. Intel does not release their unit shipment data to the public, for one thing. Additionally, they do not say how much of their fab resources are devoted towards x86 microprocessor production. Calculating Z when both X and Y are vague guesses is a bad idea. ;)
