Part of that debt load occurred from the fantasy of the "wealth effect", consumers/investors incurring debt based on the sense of financial well prompted by those outstanding 'gains' in the quaterly retirement accounts.

I've seen something similar first-hand in high-tech employees who have decent salaries but who historically received substantial option grants. Many of these folks bought second homes, or very expensive first homes, or boats or [fill in the blank] based on the expectation that the options would make up the difference between salary and payments to service the debt. Now, with most options underwater, a dose of reality is creeping in.
