From today's NY Times - "Many communities operate on the basis of a series of parallel lives," the authors (of a British study of riots in Northern England this summer) said. "These lives often do not seem to touch at any point, let alone overlap and promote any meaningful interchanges." Someone please define parallel for the Brits.

There were three engineers in a car: an electrical engineer, a chemical engineer, and a Microsoft engineer. Suddenly, the car stopped dead by the side of the road, and the three engineers looked at each other wondering what could be wrong. The electrical engineer suggested the electronics of the car could be removed down to its parts and then try to trace where a fault might have occurred. The chemical engineer, not knowing much about cars, suggested maybe the fuel was becoming emulsified and getting blocked somewhere. Then, the Microsoft engineer came up with a suggestion, "Why don't we close all the windows, get out, get back in, open the windows again? Maybe it'll work!?" GZ
