Tench, 1st time buyers could have been lured into a sub-$1000 PC with a 300 Mhz K6 and lowly graphics. Their next PC would have been a > $1000 P3 at 600Mhz or something like that. I know a lot of people who bought a value PCs and 12 months later they complain because all the new software (games) runs like crap on them. A more expensive PC can last 2 years or so. Plus moving your software from 1 PC to the next is a nightmare.

To be honest with you I don't know exactly what would have happened had intel not entered the value market. All I know is that Intel made it a valid market. Like all of you guys know, the Intel brand name is very strong and their products were significantly better than AMD's/Cyrix's until the Athlon. One good reason that I had not thought of for Intel entering the value market might have been a foresight that something like the Athlon could have come out from their competitors and entering the value market was like a preemptive strike.

Different topic as the X-box one seems to be buried pretty deep: some of the new Bin Laden tape and its translation has been showing on TV today. A few points:

1. He was speaking about what he and his pals thought would happen to the WTC buildings. They thought three or four floors would be impacted directly, and that the burning fuel from the planes would melt the steel structure, but only collapse those floors and the ones above. They were "pleasantly surprised" about the entire buildings collapsing.

2. Bin Laden praised Allah, thanked Allah, attributed the great success of the attacks to Allah. That kind of stuff showing on TV sure will make it harder to keep terrorism separated from religious fanaticism, IMO.

3. The suicide attackers were sent to this country without being told that they were on a suicide mission. Even though they are trained and brainwashed that this sort of thing is their ultimate "career path", it is inhuman for the terrorist top dogs to be carrying out their "business" that way.
