"I was making the point that space travel and moon travel were reasonably considered in the scientific community 30 years before the moon landing, which was in direct contradiction to a somewhat throwaway statement you made"

It was a throw away statement, and you corrected my assertion that 30 years before the moon landing that idea would seem ridiculous too. Your article pointed out that some did think it ridiculous as people with your view do regarding SDI. Seemed like a consistant line of thought (and still does).

"Your statement seemed to challenge the ability of scientists to make....to make technological predictions 30 years in the future"

That was my point. Not scientists specifically, but people in general. Aren't you and other critics of SDI claiming it won't work? PLEASE CORRECT THAT ASSUMPTION if it is wrong.

"and there is every reason to assume that the arms race it was intended to suppress will now begin again, perhaps with new contestants"

I realize that is what you believe, and I believe it to. But the dangers a POTENTIAL arms race it MAY start are outweighed imo by the potential dangers of doing nothing. That is the crux of it, and where you and I disagree. If you are right and we build it, in 30 years I can say "Sorry we spent some money on that system we did not need". If I am right, and we don't build it, we will most likey not be able to discuss it because we will be dead.

A bit facetious, but hopefully you get my point.
