It begs the question.... what are the armed forces??

That's an interesting question in its own right.

Americans have a fundamentally different view of the armed forces than the rest of the world. Everywhere else the Army is part of domestic (internal, homeland, whatever) life, but here, the Army does all its fighting somewhere else. Here the Army is all but enjoined from taking an active role in domestic policy.

This view makes sense given America's fairly unique history, and I can't think of any other major country on the planet that has such a view. Here it's "join the Army, see the world", everywhere else it's "join the Army, secure the border".
