here is my take on Yahoo

have used many of the services including email, paydirect, clubs, messenger(instant message software just like aol messenger), search engines, finicial pages for stocks, storage space.

most of these services were at one time free, now fees are charged. for Yahoo that's good because it provides a revenue stream based on useage.

let's take a couple examples of the $$$ generated for the paydirect, a cash transfer service that as of today charges a fee for use. you can transfer money from a one bank account to another or send money to someone else. the fee rate is $2.80/$100. that is much cheaper than a cash advance from a credit card and some banks will charge for money transfer from one account to another.

Call center: make internet phone calls from puter to phone for $0.02 per minute. haven't found a long distance carrier that can beat that(hint hint T)
this applies 24/7, NOW just off peak hours. you can dial phone to phone long distance for $0.10 anytime. problem is you have to dial 800# first then a 7 digit account number then the number to make the call.

so Yahoo! does now have revenue stream for useage. more useage, more $$$

the storage space on Yahoo profiles is quite good. 30MB of space for storage of files, pics, etc.

however, the other features are must less reliable. for example Yahoo! clubs are a very popular feature. no cost. this freebie comes at a cost. persistant server problems make using the clubs frustrating. and chat features are buggy. many switch to excite clubs, but with that demise that option no longer exists.

Yahoo! messenger is a very popular instant message program. I like it much better than the AOL IM program. more features and the call center option gives Yahoo the edge, IMO.

I doubt the paid quotes is much to depend on. Too many services that give free streaming real-time quotes. however, yahoo has improve the finiancial research pages quite a bit. I got there often to see a company's info.

Yahoo still is a standard to look at. with fees now being charged(which i think will stick) the company has a better based to built a stronger and improved site for all types of services/info.
