I shorted amd at $17.50.

Seems like run up has been excessive.

Albert: is there one [viable alternative] for large corporate market?

You don't have to buy Compaq or Dell, even if you are a large company.

Regardless, Compaq and Dell do have a choice. They could simply offer AMD if that is what they wished to do. For them, there is a viable alternative.

As far as MS then what about os-2, unix, linux and prior to that ibm dos?

OS/2 was, to some extent, a viable alternative. Linux is not. Not yet, anyway. Microsoft has increased the barriers to entry to an unimaginable degree, virtually ensuring their monopoly unless they either screw up in a really, really major way or we have government intervention.
