"Literal spiritual or just poetic imagery?"

And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel."

And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you;

And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.

And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.

for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.

And the LORD appeared unto him (Isaac) the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake. And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well.

And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel. And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins; And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.

Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:...........And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;

Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel,

Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And to your Seed,"3:16 Genesis 12:7; 13:15; 24:7 who is Christ.

What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made;

I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

Santiago, As you can see the use of "Seed" is literal figurative and poetic. Context must be the determining factor with regards to meaning, as with all language and communication. It is our job to determine the authors intended purpose. It is as shallow to say that all who believe in a future fulfillment of prophecy are strict literalists, as it is to say that all Preterists do is spiritualize. Neither is true, since Preterists believe that prophecy was actually fulfilled by God, and futurists allow for much figurative use of language as well.

Santiago,

As I said before, if the verse did not make sense literally at first look, then one must look at them spiritually, as I previously mentioned. Maybe that is the case with the verses you mention. Maybe the verses you mention might have dual fulfillment (they will be fulfilled perfectly, two different ways). I am not sure because I have never studied them, to be perfectly honest.

I wanted to mention these verses are not crucial to understand to know about eternal salvation, the most important message in the bible. The reason I make this statement is Christians disagree about scripture sometimes that is not essential to understand. Eternal salvation is essential to understand, by all! These verses do not apply as being essential to understand, literally or spiritually.

However, let me ask you a question, are these verses literal or spiritual, in your opinion?

Luke 7:50
Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:18
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

John 3:36
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."

John 5:24
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

John 6:40
For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."

John 6:47
I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.

John 11:25 -26
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

Acts 16:30-31
He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household."

Romans 10:4
Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

Romans 10:9
That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 10:12-13
For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 *
The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

2 Thessalonians 2:12
and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

1 Timothy 2 1:4
I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone-- for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

Hebrews 10:39
But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.

1 John 5:5
Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

1 John 5:10
Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.

A good rule of thumb is using a literal interpretation, unless a literal interpretation just does not work, or does not make sense. Then go with a spiritual approach in interpretation. But also keep in mind, and never preclude, that sometimes there might be a dual interpretation of a verse, one literal and one spiritual. But be very careful with spiritualizing. It gets many in trouble and truly leads them away from the true message of God, IMHO.

No one should ever take a 100% stand on literal interpretation or spritual interpretation of scripture. It obviously takes a mix of the two, with a heavy bias toward literal interpretation, IMHO.

God Bless,
IGIT
