Yes, France never forgave Israel for winning the Six Day War, apparently. To add insult to injury, the Israelis also stopped being socialists. Did you know they found a speech in de Gaulle's papers when he died, mourning the destruction of Israel in June 1967?

It's true the French adore the Palestinians, but any latent anti-semitism plays a very minor role in this.

Surprise, I'm not convinced of this. I mean, it's scarcely as if the French love their local Algerians and Moroccans! So what is the cause?

Are Arafat's recent speeches on-line (in English, or maybe better Arabic - I could ask a friend to tell me what was said.)

memri.org runs translations from the Arab press; Arafat's last speech is there. The New York Times ran the full text of Sunday's speech. The Israeli papers also report his speeches carefuly (not a shock), so you could follow The Jerusalem Post (http://www.jpost.com) or Haaretz (http://www.haaretzdaily.com), which are published in English.
