And I hadn't thought of the memory limitations on Xeon systems that will be alleviated by Hammer systems ;-)

Regardless, Hammer won't be able to compete with Itanium in many of IA-64's core markets. These will be places where RAS features do mean a whole lot - market segments dominated by the likes of Sun and IBM.

That said, you do have a point ;-). Clusters are encroaching on many of the traditional "big iron" market segments. Using standard components, you can get awesome computing power at a fraction of the cost.
