I think that was a problem. Since the British had a hard time telling the little brown peoples apart, having them draw the boundaries was a set up for problematic and erratic state lines.. It was the white man's burden, and paternalism combined with ignorance usually has pretty rotten results. Although I must say that India has turned out a great deal better than I would have thought it could.

Just because a vacuum is there, one needn't rush in to fill it. Self determination is vastly underrated by colonizers, except at home, of course.

ps- have you read this book: England and the Middle East : the destruction of the Ottoman
Empire, 1914-1921? It was recommended to me by a friend, I have it on a very long reading list of books to read eventually....
