Educated people knew the Earth was round for centuries. Ptolemy knew the Earth was round, and the astrolabe, showing his view of the heavens, and used for navigation, shows it as round. However, there were all sorts of fears of the antipodes. For example, some thought that there was a whirlpool that would suck ships down into the sea. It was Columbus's goal to prove that there was a navigable route to the Indies, without having to go around Africa.......
