It sounds like Qualcomm has finally gotten tight with VOD. >> I'm exceptionally pleased. Vodafone is tailor made for multi-mode with 1xRTT because of Verizon, as is any carrier with feet in both camps (Telstra, Unicom, and possibly SKT and KTF). While Unicom can get by with the MSM6300, it would seem that the MSM6600 is the chip that VOD/Verizon needs most, although the MSM6500 could have applicability, and for starters the MSM6300 would get Vodafone's customers out of having to roam on VoiceStream and allow Verizon customers like myself the capability to ditch my VoiceStream sub.. Sampling of the MSM6500 and MSM6600 was originally expected in 2003. Have you seen anything later or greater is on the schedule? Realistically here, we could be looking at handsets based on the chips to deliver in 2004. It scares me just a tad that the QCT website says "Check back again soon for detailed product information", for either chip. <g> Middleware will be VERY interesting in the Vodafone equation. One might wonder if Qualcomm plans to get involved in some of the many initiatives that Vodafone and its traditional suppliers are involved in. << I was complaining (for a long time) about the fact that Q didn't seem to be involved in the W-CDMA development effort....but that seems to have changed dramatically in the last six months. >> They have done very well. They promised to step up European staffing for marketing, technical support, and standards work at the beginning of this year, and it appears that they have done so, and I think they have actually opened several small offices in addition to Sophia-Antipolis. I wish they had ramped this effort several years earlier, but better late than never. From a chip development point of view their timing is not at all bad. - Eric -
