Elmer, where you mention the 100 and 200 numbers with each defect killing 1 die and there being 50 evenly spread defects. The Intel solution would yield 50 good dice and AMD 150, or 3 times as many. I am not so sure it is as simple as that. It does not seem logical that AMD makes 3 times as many parts from the same sized wafer as Intel does.

But it should. That's the problem. Why does Fab30 put out so few Athlons???

People have mentioned that AMD has a yield around 85% on the Athlon. This is good and that would mean that Intel has a yield of about 28%. This goes a long way towards explaining the recent channel problems Intel is having. The recent delays in the latest version with smaller features mean that this problem will continue for at least 6 months more. In those 6 months AMD has a huge window of opportunity.

Sigh.... Bill if AMD had 85% yields they'd be putting out 10s of Millions of Athlons. When are you going to put 2 and 2 together? It walks like a Duck, it looks like a Duck, it has feathers, makes quacking noises and likes to swim. You still can't figure out what it is can you? Maybe it's a groundhog? No? An ardvark? Anteater? The only thing you can figure out for certain is it absolutely positively can't be a Duck.

Brew some coffee Bill...
