A friend I know who is a conservative Republican and medical doctor of 40 + years has long been distressed at the lack of care for those who just don't have or can't get any decent coverage. Over time, he has donated a fair amount of work to help make it more available.

He's convinced though that the best of many imperfect solutions is single payer. He did not start out with this point of view, but ended up there.

At a minimum, to reduce the huge intermediary fees of medical corporations, insurers, and CEOs collecting $hundreds of millions, while millions of Americans go without medical and dental care and risk financial catastrophes due to lack of coverage.

Know why provincial gov'ts in Canada keep having financial problems? Medical costs. BC almost went bankrupt some years back.

Know why Canadian taxes are so high? Medical care. Tax dodging became a national sport there some time back. Canadians visiting the US have no particular problem with US customs coming in. They do have problems with CANADIAN customs going back- -because they commonly shop here for the lower prices (caused by lower taxes), then the Canadian gov't wants its cut.

Have I experienced the problems with the Canadan system? No; I'm American. But I know lots of Canadians and lots of Canadians who have. Know something? They're not nearly as you are about that system.

Are you Canadian or American?

And if we adopt their system, do you expect to be one of the beneficiaries? Or one of the stuckees?
