joe-- are are a bit lenient. 1st-- convicted felons do lose some rights,,, they do not vote bbut most did not anyway. They cannot hold civil service jobs, but most want something that pays more anyway-- or they go on welfare. Supposedly they cannot purchase a firearm either--- but that always does not happen. Additionally, with the right lawyer and enough $$ after a length of time--*POOF*,, those records can be changed.
Why do you want green cards to last 10 years? 4 years on a student-- re-apply annually with grade & course load restrictions or go home. 2 years on a work card-- to be reapplied for by applicant & employer indicating a NEED for these skills or send them home. After the 2nd work card it is become a citizen or go home-- and not just a waste of time test,, show they have a brain, do all you asked for plus some or go the hell home. Any one here without a good card gets deported once-- executed the 2nd time (that would certainly slow the drugs coming from Mexico). New rules at the borders-- they put their hands on their head and walk into the containment vehicle or be shot-- no questions,, just bullets.
