Asian Stocks: Taiwan's Winbond Up; Singapore, Hong Kong Mixed
By Brett Cole

Taipei, Dec. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan stocks rose, led by Winbond Electronics Corp. and other memory chipmakers, after the price of their main product rose by 4.8 percent on Friday suggesting demand for the main memory of computers is recovering.

The TWSE Index gained 152.96, or 2.8 percent, to 5551.24. The index is the world's second-best performer in the last three months, up 51 percent in U.S. dollar terms.

``I'm still positive on the market,'' said Simon Chao, who manages $23 million in Taiwan equities at President Investment Trust Corp. in Taipei. ``But we're still waiting for the Christmas sales of (personal computers) for evidence that computer demand is recovering.''

Banking shares led the Singapore's Straits Times Index down 0.2 percent on concern their 4.8 percent gain as a group last week may have outpaced their earnings potential. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 0.3 percent, paced by China Unicom Ltd. India's Sensex Index rose 0.9 percent on optimism the government will say economic growth increased to 5 percent in the three months ended September.

Markets in Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia are closed for holidays today. Only India and China markets will be opened for New Year's Day.
