Re: more than 65% of the installed base has computers running less than 500MHz

There's no need to replace a 400mhz to 500mhz PC for most uses. But, I agree with your point on hard disks. Many (if not most) people replace their PCs not when they perceive their CPU to be too slow, but when their boot disk becomes full.

Right after you admit that 2001 was a pothole for earnings.

This wasn't a bad year for CPUs, at all. AMD has experienced record units and revenue in CPUs, despite a huge marketing push by Intel, much more competitive pricing by Intel, a substantial MHZ advantage for Intel, and a legal climate that allowed Intel to use marginally criminal sales tactics. It has been a bad year for flash, which hurt Intel somewhat, but hurt AMD a lot more.

Next year will probably be a little better for flash, but may be quite a bit worse for CPUs. Units will be up some this coming year, but next year for CPUs will be like the past year for flash - a year of overcapacity and bitter price competition.

I admit that INTC's actual earnings may have bottomed with the report of this quarter. I expect a report of near 2 cents or less for actual earnings. That will put the P/E of intc over 200 for 2001. I think that the p/e should be around 20 for intc. normal earnings will likely come in around 30-40 cents after the rinse of this year and next year. so call it a $6-8 dollar stock. $10 if you are really optimistic.
