Robert, RE: I would think that without tech, there is nothing to differentiate the US economy from that of other lower labour cost nations. Therefore it is tech that makes the difference in the US (more than compensating for the higher labor costs)

Twenty years ago the oil and gas industry had as great a weighting in the S&P 500 as tech did at the peak of the bubble.

Over the next half decade, the oil and gas industry in our country collapsed.

Our economy did just fine.

I'm not saying that the tech industry is going to collapse further from here. I am saying that our economy could handle a collapse of the tech sector and still be ok.

There are plenty of things outside of technology to distinguish our economy from other countries. The entrepreneur survives and thrives in our economy. That stimulates innovation and keeps the economy going. That innovation is not isolated in the technology sector. That innovative mind can thrive and succeed in Bentonville, Arkansas just as easily as it can in Santa Clara, California.
