Bill, Re: ...the USA has several diverse racial groups, some of which have a lower average life span. ... You mean due to - some unknown - genetic reasons? Then you are certainly wrong. On another note: a solution for that problem could be the access to basic medical treatment by everybody due to a more social system than in the US. The general health care system is certainly not the model of the American way of life to be copied by the rest of the world. Regards, S

Bill, I investigated the longevity thing and while it's true that upper middle class live a long time it's mostly attributed to the expensive health care they receive, their quality of life at the later stages of life is diminished greatly. In other countries people live a long time trouble free but once something serious happens they die. Overall the US has a mediocre longevity record. To be blunt, I had never seen so many sick people in my life while I lived in Greece. Here, everyone has allergies, a lot of people have cancer, etc. To my surprise, cancer rates are starting to increase in Greece also as Greece is becoming more industrialized and their diet is becoming more americanized. I consider myself upper middle class but I think that all citizens should have quality health care. The fact that if you lose your employment you can find yourself without coverage (or with tremendously expensive COBRA coverage ) is scary. I know for a fact that in Greece, the upper middle class goes to private doctors/hospitals when they want to avoid the wait. The really wealthy go abroad. C
