I struck up a conversation with a British mom a while back. Knowing that she had lived in the States for a few years, I asked her whether children in Britain are driven to as many "activities" as in the States. She said that it was no where close...and btw, "reading a book" is considered more an activity in Britain than it is in the US. I have no idea how representative that is.

A couple of other parents, now with grown children have independently mentioned that when their children got old enough, they sent them out to travel through the Continent, Australia, New Zealand, or the States, etc., purely to see how other people lived/cultures. Learn about the world. Not a bad idea.
