Hey Matt

This is just an opinion based on my reading so take it for what it's worth. This and 50¢ will buy you a KKD. Home is for casual users like me and Pro is for power users like yourself. Most opinions I have read suggest sticking with W2KPro if you're comfortable with it. I tried it but was very uneasy with all the admin stuff and I probably got hold of a lemon to boot. It wouldn't recognize my password and after a tech assisted format and reinstall it did the same thing again. I sent it back and ordered the XP Home Edition I'm using now.

Here's my observations on XP.

First XP home vs XP pro.

XP Home will not support multi processor systems and
will not connect to a Domain Controller on a lan
so therefore I chose XP Pro.

Most crucial thing to do before an XP upgrade
is to MAKE SURE your hardware is supported.

A good resource here:
microsoft.com

See if your hardware is supported. If not visit the vendor's
site and download the latest drivers.

On one system I did a clean install (Wiped the drive via fdisk).
Everything worked first try except multi-monitor.
Actually my second video card was not supported according
to HCL. Had to go out and buy another one. Man I love
the multi-monitor setup whem I'm trading.
This system originally had 128 meg and I found XP a bit
sluggish so dicided to stick another 128 meg. Now XP rocks.
For this system I chose the NTFS file system for added security.
Setting a home lan was a very easy via XP. The built wizards
take care of everything.
I'm using the built in firewall of XP.
I did tweak the system a bit. Stuff like disabling services
that I don't require.

After a few days of using the system I ran disk defrag a few times and the system is even faster now especially when
using your favorite applications.

Laptop:

Upgraded the ThinkPad from WindowsME (Yuck) to XP.
Everything worked first try. Was impressed cause the ThinkPads have allot of IBM specific hardware(Audio, video capture ...)

Overall well worth the upgrade for my specific needs.
I have never crashed yet ( no BSOD)...

My systems are on 24 hours a day and get heavy usage during the day.

On a sad note my favorite game of all time Driver 1 for the PC will not work on XP :-(I know it's an old game but
I'm the champion!!!)
Will probably end up doing a multi boot to Win98 so that I can play.

I have a computer question.

Hopefully the laptop isn't pre2000.
