As I live here (Bucharest) and work at the American Embassy, I guess that we can say we've got "eyes on" the target. Their pricing can be seen at:

zapp.ro

They focus on the data capabilities of the CDMA network. Charges run around 40-50 cents per meg. There's an English language link for those of you who are a bit rusty in Romanian...

I can say that Romanians love their cell phones, because landlines don't work from time to time, and cell phones are status symbols. As I don't work in to commercial section of the embassy, I haven't a clue (or special insight), as to what their plan is. I can't believe they sat up in bed one morning and said, let's give Romania 3G!!!

As a military man, I'm looking for the strategic move. Are they planning on using Romania as a proof if concept, and then extending it's reach?

This is their toehold in Europe. How will they take advantage of it? This is the Front Lines. Will winning this battle prove to be significant in the neighboring countries, or EU land?? Romania could be considered a gateway; Turkey to the south, Russia to the East, and EU/GSM land to the North and West.

Maybe its a matter of take em where you get em. In which case, what did they get?
