SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 04, 2002 (AFX-Asia via COMTEX) -- Corning Inc will resume production of fiber-optic cable in four of its idled plants, recalling an undisclosed number of furloughed employees, company spokesperson Elizabeth Dann told AFX News.

Two of the plants based in North Carolina in the US are expected to start up the week of Jan 21, Dann said.

The remaining two plants located in Germany and Australia will resume operations shortly there after, she added.

"We worked down inventory towards the end of last year and now it is needed in order to meet current customer demand," said Dann.

The plants operating capacity will be determined by ongoing market demand, Dann added.
