Uncle, military threats are lower than at any time. Osama-style international criminals are not really a threat compared with historic threats. Anyway, the style of conflict these days doesn't lend itself to conscripts taking part. Technology, techniques, knowledge and experience are what it's all about.

A bunch of conscripts isn't going to be effective. There is no point in teaching people complex things to then have them never use the skills they learn. It's better to have a long-term repository of ability.

Apart from not being a good way of achieving security, freedom means voluntary action. Freedom is what is being protected. That's the foundation. Destroying the foundation to defend it seems contradictory. Freedom is the strength. What would you do to somebody who asserts their freedom to refuse to do what you tell them? You would have to deny them freedom. Maybe that makes sense to you.

But let's just agree to disagree, as you suggest. I've had my share of ranting for now.
